Ingredients

  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 1 tablespoon packed light brown sugar
  • ½ tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream or milk
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3 ½ tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1-2 tablespoons chocolate chips milk, dark, semi-sweet – your choice!
  • Optional Variations add to base recipe:
  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip: ½ tablespoon peanut butter ½ tablespoon chopped peanuts
  • Birthday Cake: ¼ teaspoon almond extract 1 tablespoon sprinkles
  • Brown Butter Sea Salt: Melt butter in a light-colored saucepan over medium heat until lightly browned and fragrant. Cool completely before using. Sprinkle with a pinch of flaky sea salt before serving.

Instructions

  • Step 1: Heat Treat the Flour
  • The most important step for safety! Place the all-purpose flour in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 90 seconds, stopping to stir the flour every 15 seconds. This ensures even heating and eliminates any potential bacteria. The flour will be slightly clumpy. Let it cool completely before using. This is crucial, as adding hot flour to the other ingredients will melt the butter and ruin the texture of your cookie dough.
  • Step 2: Cream the Butter and Sugars
  • In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Use a rubber spatula or a fork to cream the mixture together until it is light, fluffy, and well combined. This step is important for creating a smooth and creamy cookie dough base. Make sure the butter is softened, but not melted. If it's too soft, your cookie dough may be greasy.
  • Step 3: Add Vanilla and Cream
  • Add the vanilla extract and heavy cream (or milk) to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix well until everything is evenly incorporated. The heavy cream adds richness and moisture to the cookie dough, helping to bind the ingredients together. You can substitute milk if you don't have heavy cream on hand, but the texture will be slightly different.
  • Step 4: Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients
  • Gradually add the cooled, heat-treated flour and a pinch of salt to the wet ingredients. Mix gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can result in a tough cookie dough. The mixture should be thick and slightly sticky.
  • Step 5: Fold in the Chocolate Chips (and other goodies!)
  • Fold in the chocolate chips (and any additional ingredients for your chosen variation) until evenly distributed throughout the cookie dough. Feel free to adjust the amount of chocolate chips to your liking.
  • Step 6: Indulge!
  • Enjoy your delicious, safe, and satisfying edible cookie dough immediately!
