Ingredients

  • For The Chicken Marinade:
  • 1 lb chicken breast thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For The Tzatziki Sauce:
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cucumber grated and drained
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or mint
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For The Gyros:
  • 4 pita bread rounds
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup sliced red onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Step 1: Marinate the Chicken:
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. This marinade is the key to infusing the chicken with that signature Greek flavor. Ensure all ingredients are well combined to create a uniform and flavorful base. Add the thinly sliced chicken to the marinade, making sure each piece is thoroughly coated. This ensures that every bite will be bursting with flavor. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the chicken to a resealable bag. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or ideally, overnight. The longer the chicken marinates, the more flavorful and tender it will become. The acids in the lemon juice help to break down the muscle fibers, resulting in a more succulent and juicy end product.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:
  • While the chicken is marinating, prepare the tzatziki sauce. In a small bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated and drained cucumber, minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and chopped dill. The cucumber should be grated and then squeezed to remove excess moisture. This prevents the tzatziki from becoming watery and ensures a thick, creamy consistency. Mix all ingredients well until thoroughly combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting the seasoning according to your preferences. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve. Chilling the tzatziki allows the flavors to meld together, creating a more harmonious and flavorful sauce.
  • Step 3: Cook the Chicken:
  • Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Ensure the pan is properly preheated before adding the chicken. This will help to create a beautiful sear and prevent the chicken from sticking. Once the pan is hot, carefully add the marinated chicken. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until the chicken is golden brown and fully cooked through. Use a meat thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C). This ensures that the chicken is safe to eat and prevents it from being overcooked and dry. Remove the cooked chicken from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing into strips. Allowing the chicken to rest helps to retain its juices, resulting in a more tender and flavorful final product.
  • Step 4: Assemble the Gyros:
  • Warm the pita bread rounds by placing them in a dry skillet over low heat for a few seconds per side, or wrapping them in foil and heating them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes. Warming the pita bread makes it more pliable and easier to fold. Once the pita bread is warm, lay each round flat on a clean surface. Place a generous portion of the cooked chicken strips in the center of each pita. Top with chopped tomatoes, sliced red onions, chopped cucumber, crumbled feta cheese, and chopped parsley. These fresh vegetables add a burst of flavor, texture, and nutrients to the gyros.
  • Step 5: Add Tzatziki Sauce:
  • Drizzle or spoon the prepared tzatziki sauce generously over the top of the filling. The tzatziki sauce adds a creamy, cooling element that perfectly complements the savory chicken and fresh vegetables. Fold the pita around the filling to create a wrap. Serve immediately while still warm.
